September Annual Kickoff Meeting

September is the month we make a special effort to invite the community of Mac users to join us. Please invite your Mac-using (or interested) friends. We are working on presentations - have something you'd like to see demonstrated? Join Ashmug talk to send your ideas. Topics will be announced shortly before the meeting.

All meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month.
6:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Split Q&A sessions: Basic and advanced questions and answers.
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm: Presentations

To attend, park in the lower lot and enter in the main entrance. Go up the steps and turn left. ASHMUG is in the last meeting room on the left at the end of the hall. The hospital receptionist will direct you if necessary.

August Presentations:
Time Machine - Peter DeGroot showed how easy and effective backing up (and restoring!) with Time Machine is. "This alone was worth the cost of OS X 10.5 Leopard."
VMWare Fusion - Matt Beers demonstrated Fusion's significant features to make installing and using Windows relatively easy on a Mac. Can be used with many versions of Windows and unix, although Vista support is still in beta testing.

Acrobat 9:
- DiskOrder: How to organize files.
- LaunchBar: Switch with ease between one application and another.
- TextExpander: Type in a few keystrokes to robotically type as much text as you want.
- HoudahSpot: Great search software.
- SnapNDrag: Screen shots saved as alternates to .png files.
- 2Finder: Obtain a split screen with two finder windows.
- TextSoap: Clean up all the < and > in emails.
- Adobe Acrobat 9

May presentations:
- Apple TV - Rent or buy video with a click of your remote - browse from iTunes or your TV: movies (standard/HD), videos, TV shows, YouTube, podcasts, music, and photos - all in a searchable database shown on your wide-screen television.
- Miro - Turn your computer into an internet TV video player. This free application automatically downloads videos from RSS-based channels.
- Joost - Free software to view online video via broadband internet connection.

April presentations:
Omnifocus™
Omnifocus: GTD (based on the methods of David Allen in his book: “Getting Things Done”) is a management tool for organizing tasks and projects so that you can “spend more time with things that matter to you most.”

ScanSnap Scanners
These sheetfed scanners, scan into searchable PDF, a key tool for paperless organization.

At our March meeting, Alan Oppenheimer showed the new MacBook Air (and later his name came up as one of the session presenters in Macworld Expo Encore). Matthew Beers kicked off our Mini Presentations series with quick demos of Fluid, coconutBattery, and Whatsize. Yvonne Fried presented an encore of Macworld Expo highlights by showing the literature she scanned with her ScanSnap.

All Ashmug members are invited to do their own Mini Presentation of their favorite Mac software. Mini Presenters are entered in a drawing for one year's Premium access to Lynda.com online video training (used in our Master Your Mac class), a $375 value. Mini Presentations are easy , we'll help you get started - just contact us and say what you'd like to show.

coconutBattery™ A small freeware utility that reads the current charge and load-cycles of your Mac laptop battery.

Whatsize™ A small freeware application that reveals space allocation and file sizes on your hard drive.
